How Parks and Rec Embraced Diversity and Shattered Stereotypes
Charlene Haparimwi

good piece on a great show. one of the main (but mostly unknown) reasons that parks was so funny is because the writers (Harris!) were hilarious and original, and refused to give in to the stupid tropes that most major network shows devolve into. your point about Tom (and April) not having a thick accent (or fiery temper) was great, and something Aziz touched on in his own show. not every character of non-American heritage has to be accented and “foreign” (not that there’s anything wrong with that). there are millions of second generation children of immigrants that are as “American” as can be, but rarely are Asian or Indian or Hispanic characters portrayed as “regular Americans”. parks was such a refreshing show.
