American Idiot was a THOROUGHLY catchy, enjoyable rock opera.

the problem with American Idiot wasn’t that it was mainstream, it was that it was just bad music (imo of course, a lot of people liked it). hell, Warning was “mainstream” and it was really good. but Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are the worst songs Green Day has ever put out. the title track wasn’t bad, but on the whole the album was heavy handed preaching from rich 30 something dudes trying to stay “punk”. its a rare instance where i agree completely with the subject matter and sentiment, but hate the music (macklemore’s Same Love is another example). i mean, a grenade shaped like a heart? c'mon….
