HS was the first person in his family to learn how to read.

His parents and siblings were illiterate and the same was expected of him; he was not encouraged or pushed. They lived in a small town in India in a house with a leaky holey roof and no functional toilet, and mold on the walls. Daily life was about herding the cows, distributing the milk, and doing household chores. His sisters went to school for a while but weren’t interested and dropped out.
