I’m away from my phone right now…

Have you ever been in a great face-to-face conversation and simultaneously can’t stop thinking about the vibrating in your pocket? The text messages keep rolling in and you don’t want to be an asshole and pull your phone out only to find that it was a group chat ranting about nothing important.

On the flipside, it could your spouse, with an urgent question, like what should we do for dinner tonight?

In the latter example, I know it’s not “urgent” but you also don’t want to ignore someone. I don’t like it but the reality is we live in a world now where people (especially our loved ones) expect a timely response from text messages.

If you’ve ever felt this infliction, perhaps this little trick will help.

Do Not Disturb While Driving — While Not Driving

I don’t really drive that often so the Do Not Disturb While Driving feature in iOS11 wasn’t that useful to me. However, with some simple changes, I’m now using it as an auto-reply while in real life conversations.

Step 1: Go to Settings -> Do Not Disturb

Step 2: Do Not Disturb While Driving -> Activate -> Manually

Step 3: Do Not Disturb -> Auto-Reply

Step 4: Settings -> Control Center -> Customize Controls

Add Do Not Disturb While Driving to your control center. This allows for easy toggle of this feature.

That’s it.

My use case so far has been to switch this bad-boy on whenever I’m engaging with people in real life (dinner, drinks, coffee, meetings, etc).

Here’s to being less distracted and more present!
