Sai Thong is a Place

a tiny paradise

Located along Sai Nuan beach, Sai Thong is a place which feels almost purposefully lost from common tourist bustle on Thailand’s island Koh Tao.

A fair warning, though: If you’re seeking luxury, you’ve traveled to the wrong beach. Sai Thong is for the genuine, the explorer and the intellectual.

Bungalows are made with straw roofing and wooden walls, you’ll have giant geckos for roommates, and the sea breeze alongside a rusted metal fan is what keeps you cool at night. And that’s just the way I like it.

Accessible by “longtail” taxi-boat from Koh Tao’s main pier, immediately upon seeking a stay at Sai Thong, your adventure begins.

Heading to Sai Thong by longtail taxi-boat
A longtail to Sai Thong from Koh Tao’s pier will cost you around 200 Baht… Or 300, depending on how much the longtail driver feels like extorting you that day.

It’s quite village feel attracts a tasteful breed of travelers who quickly adopt and respect the natural aura and tranquility Sai Thong emits.

Once you spend some time at Sai Thong, your worries along with the concept of time will slip away and you’ll immediately feel that this magical place is exactly what someone humble needs, or what someone needs to humble them.

The beautiful beach bungalows and the family run kitchen cater to the homey atmosphere and serve authentic Thai food who’s intricate spices and curry is bound to align your soul.

Liza and I ate at Sai Thong’s kitchen for 5 days consuming 3 meals per day, each as well as beer and managed to spend $300.00 USD.

My fiance and I happily spent 7 days of our time lounging on the beach, indulging in our bungalow’s hammock, practicing slackline, making new likeminded friends, and of course, snorkeling.

Though I have no pictures to support or spoil my snorkeling claims, snorkeling off the shore at Sai Thong is absolutely the best on Koh Tao. Sharks, Sea Turtles and underwater cities containing unimaginable varieties of unique fish spanned as far as our eyes could see.

Each night after having left Koh Tao, I still have Sai Thong withdrawals and wonder when and if I may be so lucky to find myself there again.

Sai Thong is a tiny paradise awaiting new friends.
