Why You Want a Team

For many reasons, building a company is really hard. For those same reasons + more, building a company alone is really really hard. Notice my language, it’s not impossible, but solo founders bring on many new obstacles that “groups” of founders avoid simply by working together.

There is a lot of data and analysis regarding the exact number of founders you should have to give you the best chances to raise money and build the most successful company. You can read about all of this here and here and here and I’m sure in other places.

I subscribe to the idea that you should just build the company and not look for x number of founders before starting. BUT, I think building a company alone is really freaking hard. And if the data does not convince you, here are some of my thoughts:

Winning alone is not as fun.

I did not really think that this was true until I started doing things alone. And let me tell you first hand that not having teammates to celebrate with is not nearly as fun. I always played team sports growing up…maybe for good reason. But in my experience the UPs are much worse without a group of people to win with. There’s another reason on the same note.

Losing alone sucks.

Losing alone is really hard because you have no one to bounce off of. It is much harder to fight back up the “startup” climb if you have no one to boost your spirits.

This was pretty much the sum of my thoughts: working with people is way more fun!!! Now choosing those people to work with is a whole other thought.
