Interesting article on something that is absolutely fraught with confusion and anxiety for a lot of people, so thanks! I have to say, I’m firmly with Danny Meyer (and Mr Pink) in that I don’t believe that it should be the customer’s responsibility to ensure that staff get paid what they’re worth by their employer.

While — for instance — upping your tip because someone may be getting paid less than the minimum wage is certainly the humane thing to do in the circumstances, I do wonder if (as the restaurant industry demonstrates) it actively encourages companies to maintain the status quo/behave badly as they can defer all of the responsibility and pressure onto customers to ‘tip generously’.
