Usability Testing

This is the microwave we used for our usability test and as you can see it is a little different from most microwaves you have probably seen. And you may ask why? Well do you see a popcorn button on this microwave?

For our usability test our participants had to complete three tasks with a microwave. We are doing this usability test to gain knowledge on how some microwaves can give different users problems whether it is the power button or even opening the microwave door. The tasks were 1. set the timer, 2. change the power level, and 3. cook a bag of popcorn. We also chose to do three frat brothers between the ages of 18–21 because they seem more likely to reheat food due to them living in a frat house. We then recorded each task based on a scale of how 1–5 with 1 being very easy and 5 being very hard.

Personal Experiences

I personally thought the usability test went very smoothly and the participants weren’t too confused about what to do or how to do it. The test may have been too easy and maybe in the future we could use a different appliance like a stove or an oven because I feel like college students don’t really have to use those on a regular basis. And maybe include some harder tasks for the participants, for example, reheating food with only the popcorn button.


I really liked the test because it’s interesting to see how people react under pressure of taking a test. We also used a microwave that a lot of people aren’t familiar with so it made our a test that much better. I also enjoyed creating different tasks for our participants and seeing their faces when they got a free bag of popcorn for their hard work.

This is what our brain storming session looked like during class. We tried to list our tasks and methods on how we would tract data during the usability test. This kept us organized and on top of our assignment.
