One Night
You know when you think you can write…
He handed over the card, the man scribbled his name, and he received the infamous ‘Xs’ on both hands. The man standing at the entrance opened the door; the muffled music from before was now clear. Heat. A wave of heat and sweat washed over him. He remembered why he disliked this scene. There were too many people in a confined space.
As he ventured towards the bar, he had to push and elbow his way through the crowd of people dancing and talking. He saw his friend behind the bar — busy with all the other patrons. But knowing the bartender pushed him to the front of the line. His friend looked good; more mature and actually happy.
Reid is far better than I ever would have been.
He grabbed an open seat at the end of bar — away from the crowd surrounding the bartenders. He surveyed the room. Girls grinding on girls, guys on girls, guys on guys. Then he saw the guy near the DJ. He was dancing with what looked like friends as a group of them clung together in a makeshift circle. To call this anything but staring would be a lie. He was watching so intently that he forgot about the friends the anonymous guy was currently with. They noticed the creepy man staring in their direction and began to stare back. He still didn’t notice. The guy looked up and acknowledged his presence.
FUCK. Fuck. fuck.fuck.fuck.fuck.fuck.
He scrambled to the outside patio to cool off from the heat inside, but mainly as a way to hide and escape one of the most awkward moments he had experienced in a long while. But of course, the guy walked outside to find the creepy man who was staring at him. A quick scan and his cover had been blown.
“Hi.” Terrific the conversation is going swimmingly.
“So..uh…my friends said you were staring at me.”
Fuck. “Oh, you? I was wondering if I recognized the DJ.” Smooth.
