Today’s science fiction is mostly of the ‘post-apocalyptic’ variety where it doesn’t show us what kind of world we can create because we, as the human race, have agency and willpower. Instead the sci-fi we see on television shows us what will become of our world because we, as the human race, are savages, will never really change out of our bestial nature and will whenever challenged fall back on the worst in our beings.
Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek is one high profile example that comes to mind. The show shows a starship in a society that is past capitalism with a diverse crew that explores the universe for science. It even featured a Russian crew member and an interracial kiss. It was made deliberately by it’s creators to show what kind of world we could be living in.
