The portable surface-to-air missile you’ve seen all over the news. Taking down Russian Helicopters one at a time. The Stinger.

This missile changed the game for Ukraine. Not having to rely on a large anti-air gun. Instead, being able to shoot and run.

And here, you’ll get to find out everything there is to know about this missile. From its specifications to video demonstrations to its kill record.

Fair enough?

Origins of the FIM-92 Stinger

American Soldier Firing a Stinger Off

It was a project taken on by General Dynamics, the same company that made your freedom-delivering F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The program to create this missile started in 1967 in an effort to replace the Redeye. So fittingly, the Army originally named this missile the Redeye II in 1971.

In 1972 the name was changed to Stinger, with the first live off-the-shoulder test being done in 1975 courtesy of some technical difficulties in the years between.

Production of the A model eventually started in 1978. With a B variant coming along that introduced a new seeker.
