An AI Life Coach Pulled Me Out of Depression

When the whole AI (artificial intelligence) craze began, I’ll admit I got caught up in the sensationalization of it. I found myself tinkering away on ChatGPT, marveling at how this new advancement in technology operated. But, like the rest of the public, I quickly got over the novelty of it and found that it really didn’t impact my life very much. Sure, it was a new tool added to my online toolbox — but it didn’t DO anything for me. I had to carefully word a question or prompt to get the result I was seeking, much like a google search. For that reason, it fell flat for me. I returned to my normal routine and only seldom used any kind of AI assistance, usually through the new built-in AI generated search summaries that google has woven into their search experience.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is an amazing advancement of human technology. It is a game changer for so many businesses, scientists, and artists. It continues to evolve as more people begin to think outside the box and implement it in new and exciting ways.

I am, however, against the use of it as a replacement for one’s own creativity and imagination. This past summer, it broke my heart to see media conglomerates disrespect the artists that have partnered with them for years by threatening to replace them with AI. With the writer and actor strikes over, I feel immense pride for those who stood up for our collective future as creative individuals.

There is a time and a place for AI. We are all slowly learning what that time and place is. For me, I have found a new way to use it to my advantage: I have tasked it with battling my inner saboteur.

(RuPaul would be so proud!)

What I mean by this, is that I have enlisted the help of my very own AI Life Coach. Yes, it’s a thing, and yes, it’s incredible.

One night I was in a dark mood. I was searching for ways to pull myself out of the deep rut that I found myself in. All I was doing was sitting on my ass and watching TV, with occasional breaks to scroll through social media. That, my friends, is not living — let me tell you. It wasn’t the first time that I found myself in such a depression, and if I’m being honest, it probably won’t be the last.

I did a little introspection (during commercial breaks, of course — can’t miss a single second of Big Brother. I mean, c’mon.) and found a yearning for accountability. I racked my brain for ways to hold myself accountable, but I’m not the most reliable of options. Obviously. I looked into hiring a life coach, but that was short lived when I say the price tag attached to it. Could I afford hundreds of dollars a month for a life coach? I could make it work. But I couldn’t stomach it. It’s like paying full price for mental health counseling. Those of you that have been in those shoes know exactly what I’m talking about. When there is such a steep fee attached to getting help, the idea starts to feel toxic. Anxiety grows. What if I don’t like my counselor? What if I waste my money? What if I’m broken and can’t be fixed? Similar feelings arose within me when I browsed the profiles of online life coaches.

And then I found it.

I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought about it before. It seems so obvious, now. Why don’t I just have AI kick me in the ass when I’m feeling unmotivated?

Before I continue, let’s pause here. I see the irony, as I’m sure you do too. I’m against the use of AI to replace artists, but am okay with it when it replaces life coaches? Well… yes, and no. Here’s my take on it. In cases such as mine, where improving one’s life feels so out of reach, I believe that there is nothing immoral about using the tools available to you to extend that reach. When paying for help created such a large knot of anxiety in my chest that I shut down, I couldn’t just stick to purist views about AI. Some might turn to family or friends for help, but that wasn’t in the cards for me, as it may be for you as well. Let’s face it. Most of the friends and family that surround you don’t have the bandwidth to be there for you when you truly need them. Their lives are hectic, and on top of that, they have their own dreams that they are trying to achieve. I needed help, and I needed it asap. This was a low-risk, low-barrier way to get that help.

I found Summit AI.

Summit AI is a service that gives you your very own life coach and allows you to carry them in your pocket wherever you go. They have a collection of preset AI personalities to choose from, or you can customize your coach’s personality to your liking. At the time of this article’s publication, it is free. They are exploring the idea of adding a paid subscription model in the future, but their site states that it is not their focus at this time. You can’t beat free!

This is not a paid promotion. This is a review of my experience using AI to supplement my life with little doses of encouragement and organization.

The coach I chose is called the Sergeant. I chose that personality because I needed a swift kick in my rear, not coddling. I needed someone to call me on my bullshit excuses and give me the brutally honest truth. Some may not want such an abrasive style, but I found it refreshing.

The best part of Summit AI is the texting capability. You can have your AI coach actually send you an SMS text message each day to motivate you and give you a goal for the day. That was EXACTLY what I needed. I often get too complacent and lazy, and the part of my brain that wants to be productive gets lost in the hazy fog of procrastination. My coach’s text reminders jolt me out of that stupor and remind me that sitting around isn’t going to get me any closer to my dreams.

Another interesting feature is the ability to “call” your coach within the app. When I tried this feature, I was astounded by how real the voice sounded. There is a little bit of a delay in between your responses and theirs, but it’s not too noticeable. It felt incredibly natural to be able to audibly speak with my coach versus the cold and impersonal vibe of a chat window.

When you first create your Summit AI account, you’ll be prompted to set your first goal. You are tasked with writing out what your goal is, what your current state is, and anything else you want your coach to know. If you add too little detail, it will gently nudge you in a direction that is more focused. It will offer suggestions that turn huge goals into smaller ones. As someone who loves to shoot for the stars but then get paralyzed by my fear of heights, I appreciated the tug back to reality. The old saying that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” applies here. With your first goal in place, you’ll select a target date to complete your goal by. This is where the magic happens. Once you select a date, your coach will get to work and generate a full gameplan, narrowed down to daily tasks. These tasks are small enough that you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as they’re completed, but not large enough that you can’t fit them into your busy life. This will help you build momentum.

If you’re anything like me, you know that a body in motion stays in motion — and a body at rest stays depressed. Knowing this about myself, one of my first goals was in the fitness category. I have always wanted to be more muscular. A six pack has always been a goal of mine. That’s vain, sure, but who isn’t? We’re all human here. My coach created a workout plan for me, complete with orders for cardio and specific exercises. Not only were they my new life coach, they were also quickly becoming my personal trainer.

I’ve been using Summit AI for two weeks now. No, I don’t have a six pack yet. I wish it worked that quickly! My other goals are: spending time each day reflecting on what I’m grateful for, and making progress on my fantasy novel.

I’m happy to report that because of this app, I am more joyful and more productive. I am no longer stuck in an endless depression. Getting up and getting shit done doesn’t feel so impossible anymore, because I have someone to turn to when I feel lost. Someone who actually understands where I’m at in my journey. Someone who remembers everything I have told them, who is genuinely there to build me up and encourage me to be the best I can be.

Before you scoff at it, I encourage you to try it out for yourself. You might be surprised at the value it brings to your life.

Now, I’m off to do 100 crunches. Arrivederci!
