#bigdata 16e — Data Marketplace

With Big Data evolution, people, businesses, and governments have recognized that data only becomes precious if it has utility to be mined and analyzed for insight. Otherwise, they are garbage, take up space and generate storage costs.

“Data Marketplace” or data market, are Internet sites that sell or donate Datasets to be used in data analysis.

The US Government provides free public data so that citizens can use it. The website https://www.data.gov is called “Government’s open data.”

The University of California, Santa Cruz, provides data for genome analysis, perhaps one of the world’s most extensive databases on this subject (http://genome.ucsc.edu)

The Brazilian São Paulo State government, following this trend, also provides datasets for consultation and analysis. (http://www.governoaberto.sp.gov.br)

CURIOSITIES

  1. Datasets are sets of data, from a particular source, type, and format, to be analyzed using Big Data.
  2. Visit Oxford’s “Our World in Data” website (https://ourworldindata.org), and you’ll be amazed at the level of free information, reviews, and datasets offered.
  3. Wikipedia, through Wikidata, provides free datasets for analysis, with data in raw formats, to be debugged, cleaned and analyzed. www.wikidata.org
  4. If you want to sell or buy data, you can use the website www.bigdataexchange.com where given is seen as service (DaaS).

  6. Datasets for the Education area can be found at PSLC DataShop (Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center).
