Actually during the days of the second clan 1915–1944 they had about 3 million to 6 million members and had people in both parties.
The 3rd clan still has about 5000–8000 members and they have had a bit of a recent surge.
The 3rd clan did endorse the Republican Barry Goldwater for his candidacy but he denounced them none the less. What was left of KKK became republican after Democrat support for the civil rights act of 1964.
It vaguely reminds me of when the UK joined the EU. Back then the greatest opposition to EU came from the Labour Party. Then came the whole New Labour (a whole new do over of the party) and Labour ended up pushing for Remain in the Brexit vote.
My point being that political parties can change until in some cases they become the opposite of what they once were and political pressure groups can change parties or their support quiet easily if they feel the abandoned or betrayed.
