Thanks for the article. I had similar experience with Parse, albeit much less costly and alarming. Our app with Parse backend for Firebase-like functions was in production when we received the notice that Parse will cease to exist. To Parse’s credit though, 1) the notice was well in advance, 2) open-sourced the Parse codebase, and 3) even provided migration path to alternatives.
When I cofounded huupe.com, we briefly considered Firebase, but the Parse experience told me never to rely on SaaS for such a core part of the backend. Especially when it’s so straightforward to build it out ourselves.
