Types of Bias, And how to Overcome them
INTRODUCTION
During design process, a lot come into play which affect our design decision, which is being bias, when we allow our personal decision to take control, rather than thorough research that will project equal representation of different backgrounds in our designs.
What is Bias
Is referred to as ways in which people of diverse backgrounds interpret or subject themselves to their beliefs and values when approaching designs.
Often times Bias affect design process and decision making, in other to overcome this problems, designers needs to carry thorough research rather than viewing things from there own lenses or experiences.
Types of bias
Confirmation Bias
False Consensus Bias
Primacy Bias
Implicit Bias
Confirmation Bias:
This occurs when you start finding or looking for evidence to prove your hypothesis
How to Overcome Confirmation bias
- Ask Opened Question
- 2. Actively listen
False Consensus bias
This is process we overestimate the numbers of people that will agree with our design or idea
How to Overcome False Consensus Bias
- Identify and articulate your assumptions
- 2. Survey large group of people
Primacy Bias
This occurs when only remember the first participant.
How to Overcome Primacy Design
- Ensure you take detailed note and recording
- 2. Interview each part of the survey.
Implicit Bias
This happens when we stereotype a certain type of people without our own conscious knowledge.
How to Overcome implicit Bias
- Regard everyone equal when carrying out your research
- 2. Try as much as possible to carry out your finding before concluding
Conclusion
Identifying our bias play a huge role in our design, with that we tend to come out with designs that meets users demand.
