The dollar (or any form of currency) as a representative of happiness is a fairly standard concept. Of course, it is not perfect. Its ability to represent happiness hits a level of diminishing returns, in some ways, as people do not necessarily get happier as they get wealthier, after a certain milestone in wealth. This is why it is prudent to ask people specifically about their happiness.
