I don’t agree with race-blind politics but…the Klan was mostly made up of “respectable”, (petit-)bourgeois whites in its heydays, while there have been multiple if fleeting instances of cross-racial class unity in US history, whether it was under Populism, instances of multiracial strikes even during the nadir of US race relations (New Orleans port strikes), the IWW…MLK and the Panthers both worked on building multiracial coalitions of the poor. I don’t know how you can build an effective nation-spanning political coalition *without* multiracial unity.
