Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Startups in Stockholm
As blockchain is gaining wider adoption we’re seeing more companies using the technology to launch what is called Distributed Applications, or dApps.
Bitcoin can be seen as the first dApp, but blockhchain technology can be used for much more than digital currencies.
It’s still early and there aren’t many blockchain startups in Stockholm yet. But the community is developing fast and there are a number of interesting companies that are gaining traction.
Here are some of the leading blockchain and cryptocurrency companies in Stockholm:
BTCX
BTCX was founded in January 2012 and became the first “Bitcoin company” in Sweden. It is currently the biggest Bitcoin exchange in the Nordics and the company recently acquired cryptocurrency exchange Nova to expand its market share. As an industry pioneer, BTCX takes a leadership role in the community by organising seminars (Blocktech Talks) and events (Blocktech Awards).
Safello
Safello is Bitcoin exchange mainly targeting the European market. The company was founded in 2012 and has raised around $1M in funding.
KNC Miner (folded)
KNC Miner was a technology company that made software and hardware for Bitcoin mining. At one point KNC Miner was the leading Bitcoin miner in the Nordics. The company built a 30 megawatts, 160,000 square feet datacenter in northern Sweden not far from where Facebook based their datacenter. The company folded in 2016 citing competition and energy costs as the main reasons.
Norbloc
Norbloc has created a blockchain based solution that allows customers of banks to share their data between organisations. With Norbloc’s platform Fides, banks can easily comply with data regulations (such as anti-money laundering regulations) by requesting the appropriate data from their customers. The platform then allows a GDPR compliant sharing of validated customer data to other financial institutions and organisations. This saves time for both the customer and the banks, all while supporting financial institutions to comply with regulations. Several of the team members in Norbloc were previously working with KNC Miner.
Superblocks
Superblocks makes it easy to develop new dApps with what they call “Wordpress for Blockchain”. Their platform Superblocks Studio helps you code, build and deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications. The company recently released Marriage Unblocked together with Swedish fashion brand Björn Borg and allows anyone to get married using blockchain technology without third party involvement.
Chromaway
Chromaway is a technology company that works with a wide range of blockchain initiatives, products and platforms. Some examples of include the Swedish digital currency initiative, Smart Contracts for Land Registration, new ways of buying a house with blockchain technology and a Universal Identity Hub together with the United Nations.
Chainvine
Chainvine applies blockchain technology to make supply chains more transparent and effective. The company integrates its clients’ existing databases into a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform that ensures that data is more efficiently stored and managed. Chainvine recently raised a $3.3 million Series A funding round led by Deepbridge Capital.
Cryptowell
Cryptowell is an investment firm focused in fintech and blockchain technology. Its capital comes from its own cryptocurrency mining of Litecoin. Their investment philosophy is to “invest in People and Companies that share our view, belief and passion for the blockchain technology”. Cryptowell recently led the investment round in Superblocks.
Bloxpo
Bloxpo is Europe’s biggest blockchain conference. The first event was held in Stockholm in May 2018 and had over 1,000 attendees. Over 30 international & local speakers took the stage to talk about investing, building and start companies with blockchain. The event was organised by Stockholm Blockchain, Ivan on Tech and Swedish Blockchain Association.
Cryptonord
Crypto Nord is a new investment bank in the crypto finance era. The company serves blockchain companies and crypto investors across Greater China, Europe and America with services like design of Token Generation Event and listing advisory.
