For all the points of the compass, there is only one direction. — Tom Stoppard Feelings are a compass. In orienteering, you learn to discern and plot direction, to way find. The tools you use (compass, map, stars, etc) don’t find the way, they don’t choose what to do next either. That’s you in your decision. And if you’ve ever been spun around, disoriented, then you know how that feels — even moreso when it’s an internal or emotional experience. Grief or ecstasy in their strength create profound disorientation. And yet you need these feelings to regain orientation, to compare your desired direction relative to where you’re currently pointed. Your feelings are a compass, not because they tell you THE way, but because they tell you where you are compared to The Way.
