I wonder how many Americans knew that the Soviets, at least since the 70’s had pledged never to conduct a nuclear first strike. The US flatly refused to follow suit and, furthermore, is the only country to have used these terrible weapons; and they were not dropped on Japan to force it to surrender (they had been seeking a negotiated surrender for months), but rather to intimidate and threaten the Soviet Union. So, in self-defense the USSR rushed to also acquire nuclear weapons. History is repeating itself with North Korea.
