The American concept of “free speech” is fucking stupid. There is no such thing as free speech any more than there is such as thing as a free market. Nothing is free in life — everything has a cost of some kind or another. Actions have risks and consequences associated with them.
You need to understand that words are deeds. Propaganda and psychological warfare are a type of speech. Should enemy propaganda be a protected form of speech? Should someone be allowed to incite riots or yell “fire” in a crowded theater? Should relatively poor countries relative to the US, for example, allow the CIA to pour millions of dollars into media outlets, NGO’s and opposition political parties with the intention of manipulating public opinion against a government they don’t like because it won’t allow US investors to steal its resources or exploit its native population for cheap labor?
Free speech is a cute idea, but like all rights, they come with responsibilities and limits and must be weighed against legitimate national security concerns. Do you understand?
