One of my pieces, oil on canvas.

Many people have a love for art but have never thought that they could ever be a collector, or just don’t know where to start. The truth is that it has never been easier to start your collection — no matter your budget! Particularly with the expansion and globalization of the internet, you can find just about everything you could want (at the price point you’re looking for) in online markets! In this article I will start to walk you through the process and give you tips on what to look for based on my experience as a professional artist and art collector.

The first step in beginning your art collection is to figure out what you like; what styles and subjects and materials you’re instinctively drawn to. Start by going to local art shows and galleries, and don’t be afraid to browse and buy online! Websites like Etsy and eBay can host some of the best pieces in the world — and you’ll be shocked by how moved you can be even without seeing and touching the work in front of you.

Once you have seen a sufficient amount of art and figured out what you’re drawn to, it’s time to pay attention to your feelings. When you look at a piece you have to listen to your feelings and sense if it moves you in any particular way. I believe that a good piece of art should bring you feelings of joy and peace — but you might be looking for something different depending on where you will be displaying it (and why!)

Other logistic things to keep in mind is size, material, subject, your budget, whether or not there is a signature, if you’re buying directly from the artist or a separate seller, etc. Of course you should exercise common sense and practicality, but I truly believe that the feeling of a piece is paramount to all other aspects. If you find artwork, an artist, or artists that give you a sense of peace (or whatever emotion you’re looking for) you should let yourself gravitate towards them. You have to live with the art, so make sure it brings a positive influence into your space and life.

Good luck on your new venture as an art collector, now get out there and start feeling!
