What I hope to achieve from the BCIT Journalism program

For the past three years, I was studying at Kwantlen Polytechnic University for the accounting. I picked accounting because my mom is an accountant as well as my uncle and I knew I was good with numbers. Yet, it was something that I knew I wasn’t fully interested in. I knew that accounting was a job that I can get almost anywhere. As the years went on and I continued my studies, I felt like all my other friends were doing what they wanted to do and learn what they were interested in, all but me. I kept thinking to myself that next semester is where my studies would be interesting and that I would finally enjoy what I was learning, however that never happened. Until for one of my classes, I had to write an essay about whatever we wanted as long as it was related to ethics and I wrote about the pay wage gap between the NBA and WNBA. Something clicked as I did the research and wrote that essay, I knew that sports writing was something that I want to do. I have always been fond of story-telling and being a major sports fan was an added bonus. When I switched my program to BCIT, I knew BCIT would be able to open many doors and opportunities in the field I want to work in. I have had many friends graduate BCIT and was able to find work quickly, so that helped reassured me that the transition from post-secondary to the working world will be quick and easy.

My plan is after I graduate, that I would move to Toronto and work there for a bit. Toronto has some of the major sport teams there, with the Maples Leafs, Blue Jays, Toronto FC and the Raptors. Toronto would be a perfect place for me to start because I would be able to see other sports that I have an interest in and write about them as well, something that BC can’t offer just yet. Hopefully I can work in Toronto for five to ten years at least, get my foot in the door of the sports journalism world and eventually make my move to Los Angeles.

The main reason why I want to end up in Los Angeles is because I would love to become a writer for the Lakers. I have been a Laker fan ever since I was little and writing about them for a living would be a dream come true. I feel that BCIT will be able to give me the tools I need to excel in the field of journalism as I am being taught how to be a Video Journalist, how to News Write and Report, as well as having a strong presence on social media, which nowadays, is a must. For the first time in about three years, I am once again excited for school and what I will be learning as I know that it will help me on my future career and make my dreams achievable.
