I think Medium will take over the world for a while.

But I worry about growing too fast, too quickly. I worry about clutter. I worry that in all the effort to make the experience better, it just become more…like Facebook.

As I see my screen now, it has the top tabs, the Profile, Recommends, Search, and Write buttons. To the write are the tags, and top stories. Below me are stories, and right here is where I am writing.

Looks very very much like a Facebook web view, doesn’t it?

But I worry it will turn into a Facebook or MySpace.

Medium seems to be everywhere lately. Or more precisely, everywhere seems to be on Medium lately. It seems like just a few months ago, it had a certain “boy, this is cool, and wait until everyone sees how awesome this is” feel to it. Well, everyone saw how awesome it was. And they’re here. From the White House to awesome articles about hip-hop (hello “Making of AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” and Dr. Dre articles!) to some guy in his frat writing out fart jokes, it’s all here.

Which is great. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not some hipster lamenting the “good old days.” I am one of the newcomers. I’m not very cool. But with bigger audiences and users comes new features.

As I see my main Medium view now, it has the top tabs, the Profile, Recommends, Search, and Write buttons. To the right are the tags, and top stories. At the top is a nifty little place for me to write stuff, and below that is a huge list/feed of stories.

Oh Facebook. How we love to hate you.

Remember when MySpace was awesome? And then it got taken over by fancy backgrounds, 11-year-old fangirls? Remember when the freshness and coolness of a young Facebook killed MySpace off?

Feature-heavy sites are just that: heavy. I love Medium, and I love that it’s quick, responsive, and by no means in any sort of final UI. But for now, I’m really hoping it’s not simply “too much.” But who am I to complain? It’s free, it’s awesome, and I’m probably just an old man with too much time on his hands.

But please, Medium, please: never let us poke each other. Recommends are good enough.
