I completely agree, though like you point out there is a difference between a car and a phone. A phone is useless without software, a car is obviously very useful without software. The software is just a nice-to-have addition to this immensely utilitarian and frequently enjoyed product that is our chosen primary mode of transportation. We must be very careful to not allow software to make a given car obsolete, based on software alone.
