My Ride at Sky Sport Fitness (Columbus, IN)

Christine Nesci (owner) and me

Christine Nesci is more than just your average spin instructor and local business owner. She’s a motivational speaker, social media ninja, counselor, and personal trainer all put together.

I first learned about Christine Nesci (think Joe Pesci with an N) and Sky Sport Fitness when I searched #columbusindiana or #columbusin on Instagram. My wife, two boys and I had just moved back to the Columbus area to help Katie get healthy (subject for another post) when I stumbled upon one of the prominent voices on “The Gram” as Nesci and I’s mutual hero Gary Vaynerchuk calls it. As I scrolled down through the hashtag, Sky Sport Fitness was everywhere.

I did a little research to find out more about Sky Sport and was really impressed with what they were doing. Offering a certain type of exercise class (spinning) in a fitness market that can sometimes look like Wal-Mart (low prices but no one to help you when you check out) takes an all-in financial commitment and high level of talent. After meeting Nesci recently and experiencing my first group ride at Sky Sport Fitness, I’m convinced she’s got both.

My First Ride

Me looking like a fool

Upon arriving for my first group ride at the Sky Sports Fitness facility, Christine met me at the desk, helped me sign in, and let me know what to expect for the hour class. Being a guy who had never done a spinning class before, I was a little nervous about what I was getting myself into. In that moment I became thankful for Sky Sport’s first ride for free policy. At least I wouldn’t be paying to look like an idiot that day.

After getting signed in, Nesci took me over to a bike and helped me adjust the height of my bike for my 6 foot 2 frame. She explained that for my first ride the goal is to have fun, do your best, and not be too hard on yourself. After explaining three hand positions and teaching me how to use the resistance on the bike, Nesci went to the front of the class and got things started.

As the class began, I got my first surprise of the night: the entire spinning experience was in the dark. At first, I didn’t understand the purpose of riding a bike as fast as I could in the almost pitch black for an hour. After thinking about it though, a few benefits stick out to doing the class in the dark.

1. Riding in the dark allows you to focus on doing your best rather than competing with other people around you.

2. Riding in the dark allows you to get emotional, show how exhausted you are, sing at the top of your lungs to the music, or look like a fool without any judgment.

3. Riding in the dark allows you to get into an easy zone of focus since there are fewer distractions.

The other surprise that I received was how encouraging Nesci was to everyone throughout the entire hour ride. Maybe I’m just used to drill sergeant coaches but the change of approach was cool for me since I am such a beginner at spinning. Throughout the class she would shout out words of affirmation to us exactly when we needed it.

At the end of the class, I was exhausted physically. My shirt was drenched and my legs were jello. I knew the next morning I probably would have a hard time walking down the stairs. The funny thing was, I felt emotionally recharged. I think a big reason for that is how Nesci approaches her fitness class.

Maybe you, like me, are looking for a place to experience an encouraging and intense workout. If so, you should check out Sky Sport Fitness. It’s one of the few fitness places I’ve experienced where I left sweaty and out of breath but with a huge smile on my face.

Thanks Christine for having me out!

Sweaty but smiling
