Psychology is an amazingly powerful tool when properly harnessed. I think people often avoid or are weary of psychology because it’s often attributed to mysticism, but with a closer understanding, we can actually utilize the insights to construct some truly wonderful tools that solve real issues for people.

Back when I was in academia I had a marketing professor that introduced our class to Psychographic Segmentation. His work with Strategic Business Insights provided him a deep understanding of their service VALS. It’s been pretty amazing how even my simple understanding of the service and the premise (why people buy what they buy) has opened doors for understanding even basic questions or attitude that our clients have with regards to products and pathways.

If you’re unfamiliar with it I’d highly recommend taking a look into it. It’s similar in shape to the Myers Briggs but is focused specifically on commercialization of products and has been field tested for decades.

Okay, sales pitch over… But hopefully, I’ve added another tool for you to understand the Psychology of Product Design because ultimately I agree whole heartedly with your statement that good knowledge of psychology adds another “plus point” in communication.
