Chocolate has been a staple of our lives ever since the dawn of time. With traces of it found in pottery dating back to 2500 years ago, we have developed a close relationship with sugary confection. However it is known as an unhealthy snack, one that must be consumed in moderation.

While that is certainly true, our cocoa companion isn’t all bad, especially dark chocolate. Here are 7 health benefits that this snack can bring to our lives.

1. Chocolate is rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants are compounds that protect you from heart diseases. Dark chocolate contains flavanols which reduces the damage of free radicals on the heart.

They aren’t many studies on the effect of dark chocolate on preventing coronary heart disease, however it is an indisputable fact that the flavanols do support the heart, as such it is highly likely that dark chocolate can reduce heart disease to a degree.

2. Chocolate is nutritious

Dark chocolate has plenty of fiber, it is also rich in iron, magnesium, copper and manganese.

However despite all of its nutrients, dark chocolate contains a lot of calories, hence you should not rely on chocolate for your nutrient intake.

3. Chocolate boosts your energy levels

Dark chocolate actually contains caffeine, add that with the sugar, and its energy packed into one small piece.

Consume it some time after your breakfast, and you will feel a spark of energy

4. Eating chocolate makes you happy

Eating chocolate causes the brain to release the endorphins, chemicals that make you feel happy or in love.

It is no wonder then, that chocolate has been so popular since its inception, it makes us more joyful! So don’t be afraid to have a bite when you’re feeling down

5. Chocolate can protect your skin from the sun

The flavanols mentioned earlier in the article can also protect you from the sun and increase blood flow to the skin,.

Studies have shown that the MED (Minimal Erythemal Dose) which is the minimum amount of UVB rays that would cause redness in the skin after 24 hours increases after consuming dark chocolate high in flavanoids. for 12 weeks.

So feel free to indulge in some chocolate before going to the beach!

6. Dark chocolate can improve brain function

Studies have shown that eating high flavanol chocolate can improve blood flow to the brain. As such after eating chocolate, it may improve your attention and memory.

Chocolate also contains caffeine, which improves focus as well.

In addition to all the antioxidants residing within dark chocolate, it also contains Epicatechin, which supports the processes that help the body use the insulin to combat diabetes.

In summary, dark chocolate contains a lot of health benefits but is also abundant in calories, as such it is best to consume it in moderation in addition to other healthy foods.
