Influential Executive Lesson #12: Build an Email List

As an influential executive these may be some of your goals:

All of these goals are much, much, MUCH, easier if you have an active email list.

Michael’s not alone. EVERYONE I know who has major influence talks about the importance of building an email list, from the guy selling a $97 course on how to get better at Twitter, to Barack Obama.

An email list is the one asset no one can take away from you, along with your website. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networks are great places to build a community, but they can be yanked out from under you in one second. Nobody can take your email list from you.

There are a million places you can turn to for help building email lists, and lots of technology to choose from, but let me make it easy for you:

  • Bryan Harris is the man when it comes to teaching you how to build an email list. Check out his tips at (I have no idea what the name has to do with email list building, but just trust me — he’s the man).
  • ConvertKit is the technology you should use. I’ve tried others, but ConvertKit is by far my favorite due to its ease of use, great features, and how quickly the team there is adding improved functionality and features.

Homework: Sign up with ConvertKit and start collecting email addresses. Put a simple form on your website. Once you’ve done it post the link in the comments so I can sign up :) Tomorrow I’ll take a break from the lessons, but I’ll be back on Monday with Lesson #13.
