Influential Executive Lesson #2: You Better Care About The Money
In yesterday’s lesson about how to become an influential executive I said you better have a purpose that goes beyond money, because money will only take you so far.
Tip #2: You better care about the money, too.
Wait, what?!
Hear me out— if you have something important to share, how are you going to share it? Are you going to write a book? I wrote a book. It cost me over $10,000 to write it. The publisher advance didn’t come close to covering my expenses. Others spend a lot more. Even if you don’t spend money on transcribers, proofreaders, and editors, you’re still going to spend a lot of time. Sure, you can write a book while working a full time job, but you could write it faster if you didn’t have to work.
Or maybe you’re just going to spread your message on social media. How much faster and farther could you spread your message if you could invest in paid ads on Facebook? Or if you could hire a social media team of experts to help you spread that message?

Whatever you can do on your own to get your message out there, you can do it faster and better with money. I make money with my influence, but what do I do with it? I take a percentage of it as profit, and the rest (most of it) I plow back into spreading my message by investing in the staff that supports my coaching business, or by hiring writers to help me create more content, or by hiring a videographer.
“But Josh, I’m an executive, I’m not trying to make money by selling a course or writing a best-selling book, I’m trying to grow my business and further my career. Why should I think about how this makes money?”
Maybe it’s not the money in your pocket, but if you’re taking time from your day job to focus on influence, then you need to know how this influence impacts the bottom line at your company. Getting your message out may be important to you, but your company wants to see how this impacts growth. If they see the connection between your influence and the company’s marketing, PR, and sales efforts, they’ll support you using company time and money to grow your influence.
Tomorrow I’ll share tip #3, but for today’s homework answer me this: If I gave you $50,000 to spend on nothing else but spreading your message, what would you do with it?
