Influential Executive Lesson #6: Where Does Your Audience Hang Out?

In Lesson #5 your “Influential Executive” homework was to figure out who your audience is. Now that you know, you’re ready for the next lesson.

Influential Executive Lesson #6: Where Does Your Audience Hang Out?

Let’s say your audience is lawyers. How much sense would it make to spend all your time at conferences for orthodontist organizations? That’s simple enough to understand, but what about when we start talking about publications, social networks, and various mediums? Does your audience read Forbes and the Wall Street Journal more, or Inc. and Entrepreneur? Is your audience on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter? Do they prefer consuming information via video, audio, or the written word? Would they rather read a white paper, a blog post, or an email newsletter? To take it a step further, where do they go to consume information relevant to your message? Perhaps your audience loves email for certain types of information, but YouTube for another, how do you figure it out?

“You need to be in the right place, regardless of the platform’s size.” — Gary Vaynerchuk

Of course chances are your audience is in a lot of places. Few of us get all our information from a single source.

Today’s homework — tell me in the comments where your audience spends their time when they’re looking for the kind of information you will be producing. Don’t worry about narrowing it down to a primary hangout, instead make a list of all the places your audience might be found. In the next lesson I’ll give you a tool to prioritize which channel to focus on.

Speaking of the next lesson, since tomorrow is Sunday I’ll give you a break. It’s always good to have a day of rest. I’ll be back with lesson #7 on Monday.
