A Brief Summary of Equity Crowdfunding

Equity crowdfunding is kind of like kickstarter, but for companies instead of products.

Instead of spending $100 for a product that might never get produced, you’ll spend $100 investing in a company that might not make it.

Why would anyone want to do this?

Everyone will have their own reasons, but there are two big ones I see.

One, it’s a way to invest in the future that you want to see.

For example, Bloomberg reports that female founders received only 2% of all venture capital investments in 2021. In equity crowdfunding, female founders received 19% of investment dollars. That’s still a large gap, but it’s much closer. Any of the platforms covered below will give you the chance to shrink it even further, if you want.

As another example, there are a ton of renewable energy companies that raise on equity crowdfunding platforms.
