I actually agree with you about the types of experiences we expose ourselves to having an impact . I believe that our mental states and emotional states can be directly affected by the types of experiences we partake in regularly. I do think we can and should be able to pursue the media we desire, but that excessive exposure to very violent games or films can lead to higher aggression levels, and may be dangerous for people who have a history of mental health issues. My concern is that outside limited areas (children, those with mental health issues that have trouble discerning reality from simulated experience) where appropriate chaperoning is required that too much concern by concerned parties over what we should read, see, think can have a negative impact on the medium and comes off as church-lady/nanny-esque behavior. This is not to excuse or absolve truly terrible instances or depictions in games and people should speak out about specific tasteless examples as critique for the medium, but I’d like to avoid throwing the bay out with the bathwater.
