I’m a gay man against gay rights

And women’s rights, racial rights, religious rights and any other minorities rights

I suppose now you’re wondering WTF? Rightly so, let me explain.

I feel that the entire idea of these individualized, segregated groups of rights movements only perpetuates the idea of “minority.” More importantly, I believe that declaring yourself a minority completely defeats the purpose of your cause. Thus you’re trapped in this catch-22 of demanding equality for all, yet you’re intentionally separating yourself from the “all.”

Now don’t get me wrong — it’s an conundrum of an issue. In one hand you’re either a disparate group that is ill represented within the majority of society or you’re a minority. You have the choice of accepting things the way they are or fighting for the rights of this specific group and their equal treatment.

I also feel the bigger repercussion of this mentality is that we teach people NOT to look at others as equals; that you must tip-toe around someone else’s minority status: “These people are different and need to be treated differently than a normal person.” I think this tip-toeing also perpetuates the ill-will towards and mistreatment of these groups.

The bigger point that I’d like to make is that all of these minority statuses are based on minute details as to what makes up who a person is. Gay, female, black, Muslim, etc. Those are only tiny aspects to you as an individual — why is it such a defining thing that these people need to be mistreated based solely on this one specific aspect as to who they are (and more importantly aspects that they cannot control in many cases).

Which brings me back to my original point — I am a gay man against gay rights, women’s rights, racial rights, religious rights, etc. I am however, a human being that believes in human rights and equal treatment for all people. I don’t want to teach people to accept me because I am gay and I have rights. I want to teach people to accept me because I am a human being with many facets to who I am and ‘gay’ is only one tiny, tiny bit of that. To me, my homosexuality is just as significant as the fact that I have auburn hair and hazel eyes. As significant as the fact that I enjoy watching all of the Star Trek series (almost to an obsessive point but that’s a whole different issue). It however should not dictate the way another human being with an infinite possibility of other traits and aspects to who they are, should be treating me.

I don’t want to be a minority. If I were ever to have children, I would never want to teach them that such a thing even exists. I don’t want to proudly support minority groups. I want to be proud to be among a the entire human population and all of the wonderful and beautiful things we've accomplished since the dawn of our existence.
