The Dollar Menu

Not too long ago (and it’s still around in some spots) every fast food restaurant had a dollar menu.

This was very convenient in high school and college when money needed to spread a lot farther, but could also be used in other ways. Like when my buddy and I decided to drive around San Diego one night trying the $1 Chicken Sandwich at every fast food joint in the area, not out of boredom, but for science…

We “drive-thru’d” six or seven spots and split a sandwich at each sitting in the parking lot to eat them (a very California thing to do). We then rated them, taking into account things like the crispness and flavor of the chicken’s breading, the softness of the bun and the condiment ratio.

By the end of the night we came to a decisive winner (it was Popeye’s at the time), congratulated each other on our dedication and hard work, realized we had nowhere to publish our findings (who would want to on a full stomach anyway) and went home to sleep it off…for science.
