Finding your feet
When I first created an Instagram account, I had no idea how to visually tell a story, or even the point of Instagram.I thought the whole point was to ‘artistically’ destroy every photo posted with filters.
My first pic was fairly awful. The framing of the subject wasn’t bad, but I was heavy handed in applying the border and filter, just so I could be ‘hipster’. My next few attempts were just as terrible.
Feeling dejected, like I didn’t ‘get it’, I deleted the app.
When I made a comeback (a good 18 months later),my understanding of Instagram had changed. I now saw it as a platform for food blogging. It turns out I was still wide of the mark.
Almost another year later, after fumbling around in the dark for quite a while, I began to get an understanding for the social media platform. Since then, I have been honing my eye for saturated colour, compelling composition and the visual story, with some really nice results.
Looking at the entirety of my Instagram profile, it tells a great story of playing around with ideas and trying to find my feet (or in this case, eye) in a new form of creativity and expression.
With any new endeavour, the first step is not only the hardest, but sometimes the worst. As you learn from your experience, you develop the skill and the subtly to craft something truly awesome.
