My income increased every year from age 23 to age 40. From about $18k to about $140k. My happiness levels increased and decreased over time. I expect to earn about $50k this year, and I can’t remember having this many days of happiness in any year of my life.
You are correct that this is because of contentment. The money has less to do with it than you suggest. This is completely an issue of mindset, or expectation. I have everything I need, if not everything I want.
If I didn’t have children, I would be content with even lower income. As it stands, roughly 40% of my income goes directly toward my kids (I’m not counting my rent and utilities under which they live), so I know I could be content with less.
I call that happiness.
