Wait a minute…are you saying that there was never a point where land-line phone ownership was ever as close to one-to-one as cell phone ownership is now? This is purely a gut reaction, but I find that hard to believe.

I stand corrected…and it turns out my (and maybe your) narcissitic worldview underestimated the percentage of people who own a cellphone. That world bank data doesn’t separate out smartphones, so it recognizes that 96%(!!) of the world owns a cellphone line, five time greater(!!) than landline ownership.
So cellphones (not just smartphones) are already the consumer electronic item with the greatest penetration!
