The trick is making sure you stay on top of communications without letting it rule your day. Absolutely, if you’re ignoring stuff, you’re creating more problems than you’re solving.
I try to only check my email twice a day. Anything more than that turns into a giant distraction for me. But, I also make sure that I power through my inbox and get to anything urgent the moment I open it up.
I’ve got “Squirrel!” syndrome, so anything that gets the distractions our of my face is a good thing. Automating the hiding/closing of these applications has been the single greatest productivity hack of the year for me.
In the short-run but in the long-run? It’s probably costing media WAY more than they know or can measure. If they’re not already rebuilding that user experience, they’re just enabling future generations of adblock users.
