Faculty Death
A Smartson University professor passed away on April 25 after a long battle with cancer. Elizabeth Billson, 58, had taught at Smartson for 36 years. It is estimated that she has taught 10,000 future teachers over the course of her career. Her legacy is one that will not soon be forgotten. She was awarded the university’s “Outstanding Professor” award in 2015. Condolences can be sent to the Billson family at 2600 Biltwater Drive. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday.
Wreck
A collision between two trucks shut down I-59 Wednesday night. I-59 was already under construction, and only two narrow lanes were open. The two trucks were speeding are attempted to brake, but collided head on. Fuel from the trucks spread across the interstate, causing an oil slick. The slick caused a traffic jam that stopped travel on I-59 for around 45 minutes. Fortunately, neither of the drivers was injured in the crash. The crash did damage one of the trucks which was carrying refrigerated goods. The damage was reported to be around $10,000
