But the comparison to Google isn’t right. Page and Brin didn’t think they were going to one day have a multinational company called Alphabet that powered much of the world’s web infrastructure, I don’t think. They started with a problem people were having — finding content on the Internet (which at the time was not that big of a problem or even particularly hard to solve)— and then followed that where it lead, to advertising, to loss-leader products, to email, etc., with an enormous amount of experimentation along the way.
