Cruise impresses in Edge of Tomorrow

EDGE of Tomorrow acts as a cross between Groundhog Day and Halo but could it be more than its central gimmick?

As soon as we meet Tom Cruise’s Major William Cage we all know the film is not playing through the usual action movie tropes.

We learn early that there’s an ongoing war between humans as well as an invading alien force and also the humans are losing.

When General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) informs Cage he’ll be embedded with troops creating a push into France inside a D-Day like scenario, Cage tries to weasel his way out of it. He’s the military’s publicity officer and never adept at fighting.

Stripped of his rank, Cage awakens at base camp and finds himself one of the launching party for the assault and shortly after landing in France, dies.

Then he wakes up at base camp to do this again again.

Soon he meets Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) who has earnt the nickname The Angel of Verdun on her exploits in the war. As it happens, she has suffered from the same feeling of deja vu as Cage.

Cage heads into battle again, and again dying in brutal fashion but learning and adjusting to the aliens each time thanks to the tutelage of Vrataski.

The first two acts of the film build on this premise having a wry sense of humour and but additionally a touch of sadness as Cage develops feelings for Vrataski each time, aside from her it is the first time. Read more on
