The surprising thing I learned from taking my kids for a walk

I’m an outstanding father. Don’t believe me? I have proof.

Shortly after our second child was born I took our two sons for a walk in their double stroller through our neighborhood and to our local grocery store. We didn’t need groceries. I just wanted to give my wife some much-deserved rest and alone time.

On our way, someone literally stopped their car in the middle of the road to roll down their window and shout at me: “Dad of the year right there!”

And this wasn’t the…

We were walking around Chattanooga’s art district, dreaming and talking about our future, when my wife pulled me into a small, picturesque courtyard and suggested we sit down for a moment.

And then she gave me the news: we were pregnant with our second child.

I started laughing hysterically.

I’m not sure this was the reaction she expected. I was incredibly happy, no doubt, but I also couldn’t deny the hilarious timing of it all.

It had only been a couple of months since I left a six-figure salary, great health benefits, and paid parental leave without a plan for…

As I approached the bench to sit down across from my boss, I couldn’t tell if what I was feeling was the full-body-sweat-inducing Nashville humidity or the thick tension in the air from the news I was about to receive.

Maybe it was his anxious posture or the cryptic email that led to our meeting outside on a particularly hot May afternoon, but I couldn’t escape the sense I was about to get fired.

My monkey brain started racing with questions…

What would my co-workers think?
How could I tell my wife that I had failed our family? …

My heart was racing as I looked in her eyes.

I was about to tell my wife that I was ready to leave my job.

Even worse, I was going to leave without any plan of what I’d do next and with only about two months of runway before we’d be out of cash.

I’d put the conversation off all afternoon because I was afraid of how she’d respond. I mean, this was crazy, right?

No sane person leaves a cushy six-figure salary with great benefits when they have a wife and baby depending on them. Especially without a plan.
