In our lives, we often find ourselves dedicating time and attention to others, genuinely caring for them and pondering their well-being. However, it is crucial to question whether they truly appreciate our efforts. Sadly, it is those very individuals who often end up causing us the most pain. Yet, instead of pointing fingers at them, we tend to blame ourselves, as if the fault lies within us. It is a natural consequence of getting to know someone intimately - we risk being hurt and, in the process, losing our own identity. It seems that investing in others can become a tremendous liability.

This is precisely why I am drawn to the concept of being discrete. The term "discrete" refers to something that is separate and distinct, existing as its own entity. It encourages us to make conscious choices: either wholeheartedly embracing a commitment or abstaining from it entirely. By adhering to this principle, we can safeguard ourselves from unnecessary pain and disappointment.

Throughout history, numerous individuals have made the mistake of not exercising discretion. They have placed their trust in others without considering the consequences fully. As a result, they have suffered the repercussions of their misplaced faith. It is essential for us to learn from their experiences and navigate our own lives with caution.

In the realm of philosophy, the words of Friedrich Nietzsche resonate deeply: "He who does not know how to put his will into things at least puts a meaning into them: that is, he believes there is a will in them already." This quote reminds us that we must be mindful of investing our energy and emotions in others. We should choose our involvements wisely, ensuring that they align with our own desires and aspirations.

The notion of being discrete is invaluable in our interactions with others. By carefully selecting where we invest our time and emotions, we can shield ourselves from unnecessary pain. Let us take heed of the lessons history teaches us and make conscious choices to either fully commit or abstain altogether. As we navigate life, let us remember Nietzsche’s words and find meaning in our own will, rather than relying solely on the will of others.
