Marketing: a Summer of Graphic Design
I was a graphic designer for the Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo over the summer of 2018 (May 2018 to August 2018). I designed both print and digital assets for the various clubs and businesses at the University. It was the first time that I designed with brand guidelines and real clients. It was definitely a new experience because previously, I would design things to my heart’s content, rather than to really deliver a message or represent a brand.
I had more creative freedom in some projects than others, and I learned a lot from working with clients and discussing what they wanted and working with them to produce the designs. I definitely struggled a bit sometimes to come up with designs that fit the brand’s image (shout out to my incredibly supportive managers Tanya Snyder and Brooke Eby for all their guidance), but through that, I learned that sometimes you just have to scrap everything and start all over.
I also worked closely with the marketing team to create new campaigns as well as re-brand existing campaigns to help promote businesses.
