Taking on the role of a tech lead for the first time has been a rewarding journey filled with learning and growth. Here are some key lessons I’ve gathered so far:

  1. Stay Calm and Confident - Moving into a leadership role can be daunting, but staying calm is crucial. It helps in making better decisions and sets a positive tone for the team.
  2. Encourage Active Discussions - Engaging in meaningful discussions with the team is vital. It not only helps in upskilling team members with new tech skills but also fosters a collaborative environment.
  3. Celebrate Achievement - Recognising and celebrating the team’s accomplishments through kudos emails or acknowledgment messages boosts morale and motivates everyone to perform better.
  4. Allow Freedom in Work - Giving the team the freedom to choose their work methods is important. As long as the work aligns with the project scope, this freedom encourages creativity and efficiency.
  5. Focus on Key Issues - It’s not necessary to be involved in every detail of the project. Focusing on critical issues and areas relevant to your role helps in managing time effectively and ensuring quality results.
  6. Seek Help from Experienced Members - Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from experienced team members. Their insights can be invaluable, regardless of their years of experience.

By applying these principles, I’ve been able to navigate the challenges of my new role effectively. Being a tech lead is a continuous learning process, and I’m excited to keep growing with my team.
