Reasons to Ditch Your Kit Lens

And Why You Shouldn’t

You have just acquired your shiny, new camera. Your smile extends ear to ear. You camera hangs around your neck like a badge of honor. You have gained access to the world of photography! Eager to make works of art, revered for generations to come; you hit the ground running! But you only have the basic lens the camera came with. Affectionately known as the “kit lens” — is it good enough?

Most kit lenses are better thought of as an introduction into the world of photography. They have a place in the world and if you are a new photographer this is likely the only lens you have available.

Reason #1 to ditch the kit lens: Image Quality

Let’s face it the kit lens is not going to deliver the best Image Quality. I am not saying you can’t take a good photo with the kit lens, I’m saying you could have taken a better one. Kit lenses are cheaply made — they do the job but corners get cut in order to keep costs down. Typically made of plastic — with clunky or slower to focus motors, kit lenses do little more than announce you as a beginner — or on a budget. Kit lenses typically start at a higher aperture (f/3.5) than faster lenses like f/2.8 or f/1.4. This means you’ll have…
