Wonderful post Kimber! I wrote about a similiar issue in change efforts calling for a burning platform to create a sense of urgency.
Although a burning platform will temporarily shock people out of their routine, they’ll soon revert back to old behaviors unless there’s a beacon pulling them forward towards new possibilities. A purpose that keeps them going through the inevitable conflicts, ups and downs, setbacks, and naysayers. Differences in a purpose driven approach to change include:
Inventing the future rather than patching the present.
Seeking possibilities, not problems.
Selling hope, not fear.
Striving for commitment, not compliance.
Creating new habits rather than trying to break old habits.
Running towards rather than away.
