The culture of healthcare

“He’s in IT”

I discovered this talk by @aaronsklar, which really resonated with me as his assessment of the healthcare culture is spot on.

He is a designer for Healthagen, and talks about the first lunch he had with colleagues. He introduced himself as a designer who focuses on user experience, and got blank looks, until a senior manager jumped in and said:

“He’s in IT”

They then all nodded their heads and weren’t so confused anymore.

In healthcare, everyone is well aware of the information technology specialists in our institutions; they’re the people we call when we can’t login into the computer or can’t sign our notes in the electronic medical record.

But designers? Why would we ever need design specialists in our healthcare systems?

You know my response to this rhetorical question.

I blog as “Doctor as Designer” about health, technology, and participatory design here on Medium (https://medium.com/@joyclee). For blogpost updates, sign up here.
